If Only

No matter what she does
He won’t let her go
Chasing her with all of his might

But she can’t continue this
Time and again
After each and every fight

She’s not his to own
Like a priceless doll
She has hopes, fears, and dreams too

But his ego prevents him
From recognizing
So many things he never knew

Why doesn’t he see
All that he puts her through
And hear her cries unheard

Just open his eyes
Acknowledge her pain
And finally live up to his word

One day he’ll awaken
And she will be gone
Leaving him to lament and wonder why

If only he listened
If only he cared
If only he gave it a try

“We are all so much together, but we are all dying of loneliness.” ~ Albert Schweitzer
